Detectives are appealing for help in tracing a man who sexually assaulted a woman after posing as a spiritual healer.
On 30th March 2011, at approximately 20:00hrs, an 18-year-old woman and her mother arrived at an address on High Street North, E12 which they believed was a venue where spiritual healing took place.
The victim had been suffering from headaches and thought visiting a man who claimed to be a healer would help.
The suspect had some prior knowledge of the victim's headaches because her mother had spoken to him about it before. The suspect began to say some prayers and then asked the victim's mother to go and buy flowers and lemons for use during the prayers.
Whilst in the room alone with the victim the suspect sexually assaulted her. The victim was in shock when her mother returned, she tried to get her mother's attention to tell her something was wrong but was unable.
The suspect continued saying prayers and asked the victim's mother to throw the lemons away outside. She left the room again and whilst alone with the victim, the suspect sexually assaulted her for a second time.
The victim reported the incident to police on 2nd April 2011.
Police believe the suspect is Viswanathan Shadtray who is aged between approximately 37 and 40. He is of Asian appearance with thick curly black hair, a moustache and beard.
Detective Constable David Poole of Sapphire said: "The suspect posed as a spiritual healer and in doing so gained the victim's trust. He preyed on a vulnerable young woman in a cold and calculated way.”
He appealed to anyone with information on Viswanathan Shadtray's whereabouts to come forward. He also urged any other victims to contact the police.
"We encourage victims of sexual assault to have the confidence to come forward to police as soon as possible. Every single allegation will be investigated professionally and effectively in a victim-centred way. If there are further victims of Shadtray out there, please come forward and speak with us, or attend a Haven," Detective Poole said.

They provide medical, practical and emotional support to rape and sexual assault victims of any age.
