On 9th May 2012, I went to my son’s postgraduate graduation from Imperial College at the Royal Albert Hall. The hall was packed with people who had come to celebrate their siblings’ achievements.
I sat through three hours’ speeches and roll call of students being called up to the stage in recognition of their achievements.
Today, because it’s International Women’s Day, the world seems to be paying special attention to women. It’s one of those few days in the year when women are made feel special, loved, respected, listened to.
As BNP and EDL party activists, candidates and sympathisers huddle around their camp fires and trailer parks to review their final execution of their terror, confrontational tactics and misinformation campaign for voters in the May local and GLA elections in England, they will take solace and comfort from their inspiration leader and symbol of great ‘White Hope’ St George for divine intervention and spiritual guidance.
With the spate of protests sweeping across Nigeria, it is clear that Nigerians are determined to fight fuel subsidy removal. This seems to be the beginning of a tug of war between the government and the people.
Protests have escalated in the country and abroad after President Goodluck Jonathan announced the removal of the fuel subsidy. The price of petrol has since increased from N65 (US $0.40) to at least N140 (US$ 0.86) a litre. While transport costs have already skyrocketed, other essential daily expenses will also rise considerably.
Talk to any Black person who grew up in the UK since the 'Empire Windrush' hit Tilbury in 1948 and they'll tell you that they faced overt and systematic racism on a daily basis.
