"The votes cast by black and ethnic minority voters could make the difference"
4th March 2010: Labour Party “will create a future that is fair for all” while the “Tories threaten an age of austerity – a change you can’t afford,” Sadiq Khan MP, Labour’s Minister of State for Transport has said.Speaking while introducing Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidates, Mr. Khan said the British people will have “to make a big choice at the coming election about the kind of future we all want for Britain.” Mr. Khan said: “It is likely to be a close election. The votes cast by black and ethnic minority voters could make the difference. Labour has a solid record in delivering for our communities on jobs, public services and the promotion of equality. Because our policies are designed to benefit the many and not the few, they should appeal to voters from every community. “Labour’s fight to create a future fair for all is supported by the politicians from the different communities in Britain that stand in our ranks. We currently have 12 MPs from black and ethnic minority communities. We expect that this will rise significantly after the election.” Rev Jesse Jackson, the US Civil Rights activist and politician said: "Nowadays lots of parties try to dress themselves up as friendly to minorities. But you've got to go beyond the PR and warm words and look at their record and what they actually promise. It's very clear that in Britain the Labour Party is the party that has delivered and will deliver for BAME voters by focussing on securing the recovery and working for the many not the few." Labour has 49 candidates from black and ethnic minority communities standing at the next general election, including 12 sitting MPs who are standing again. The Conservative Party currently only have two BAME MPs, and according to the Daily Mail, the party is fielding 44 BAME candidates at the general election.
