5th January 2010: Shireen Tash Benjamin, the Miss West Africa 2009 made her first public appearance and presented an award at the Gamboots Christmas fundraiser on 30th November 2009. All proceeds of the fundraiser went to grassroots projects for poor children in South Africa.
Shireen won the Miss West Africa 2009 title on 27th November 2009. Shireen, Aminat Salami, the 1st runner up, and Yewande Abiodun, the 2nd runner up, were all sashed by the current Mr England. Shireen was crowned by her predecessor Amina Kamara.
“As Head Judge and main sponsor of Miss West Africa UK I was very much part of the important decision of delivering not only a beautiful and intelligent queen but someone who is also graceful and out-going. I have judged a number of shows and I must confess this was a very tough one as all the contestants were winners. They put a lot of effort and hard work to ensure the day was a success. West Africa should definitely be proud of all of them for giving the region a positive image. This is a great example of Africans taking ownership of the continent in all aspects and being proud of it,” said Ms. Pauline Long.
Shireen was so excited to take part in the Miss West Africa Beauty Pageant as a representative of Sierra Leone. “I feel that I posses passion, confidence and positive qualities in order to stand in the contest. If given this amazing opportunity to be crowned Miss West Africa, I wish to honour my title as I will be representing my sisters from the continent.”
Shireen said she is “determined to campaign against current issues such as the stigma associated with HIV/Aids and Malaria.”
Miss West Africa Beauty Pageant is aimed at promoting West African cultures, lifestyles and beauty. It not only focuses on physical beauty but also incorporates personality and talent.
