Maria Namiiro, Miss Uganda 2009 nominated for BEFFTA Awards

Her love for animals wins her praise from animal rights groups in the UK and Europe

6th October 2009: Miss Uganda for Miss World 2009 organisers are pleased to announce that Miss Uganda 2009 Maria Namiiro has been officially nominated for the Black Entertainment, Film, Fashion & TV (BEFFTA) Awards.

Maria has been nominated in the Fashion Category - Beauty Pageants - BEST CURRENT BEAUTY QUEEN.

Maria, who is also Miss Uganda UK 2009, has been praised by the animal rights groups from the UK and Europe for her answer at the just concluded Miss Uganda 09 grand finale.

The question was: “If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and why?”

Maria decided to come up with something different that no one had thought about. The answer was: “The ability to relate and talk to animals so that we can all know what they are thinking and feeling”.

She said that Uganda earns millions of dollars from tourism and that it was important to ensure that the animals were well looked after.

By winning the Miss Uganda crown, Maria’s first prize is a holiday and money to be spent at a destination of her choice. Above all she wins the opportunity to represent Uganda at the Miss World final in South Africa.

The first runner up was Joan Athieno who also won the best swim wear category. The second princess was Grace Kiwanuka and the evening wear category was won by Caroline Nantumbwe.

Mr Uganda 2009 crown was taken by Brian Lukiya who will go to represent Uganda at Mr World 2010 in South Korea.

Before and after winning the Miss Uganda crown, Maria has been undertaking charity work in Northern Uganda in support of the Latitude Care Network – www.latitudecarenetwork.org.
