30th October 2009: A young Zimbabwean beauty aspires to become Miss Black Britain 2009 for one main reason: to be able to give more support to the charity organisations she is already helping. The 22 year old Gertrude Chatukuta is now just a vote away from becoming Miss Black Britain 2009, after beating off competition from thousands of rivals. The finals of Miss Black Britain 2009 will be held in London on 14th November, at the Mermaid Hotel. Gertrude studies medical and biological chemistry at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is in the final year and is focused on pioneering research into rare conditions and diseases after her graduation. Gertrude lives in Brierfield, near Burnley. She came to the UK from Zimbabwe six years ago. “I take part in a lot of charity work so if I win the competition it will give me a chance to support a number of causes and offer them more exposure,” she says. She is happy to have made it to the finals having been modelling for just over a year. Miss Black Britain 2009 is in fact the first major beauty competition Gertrude has ever taken part in. “I hope you’ll all get behind me and vote for me,” she says, requesting all to vote for her and invite their friends to do so. Organisers of the Miss Black Britain pageant want the winner of the 2009 competition to become a role model to change the perception of young black culture in the media.Fashion giants including Selfridges, Moet & Chandon and Harvey Nichols have already sponsored the event, which will also showcase up and coming black music. Previous winners of Miss Black Britain have gone on to shoot glamorous photo shoots in exotic locations including the beaches of St Lucia. Gertrude has been allocated a specific phone number which anyone can text to cast their vote. To vote for Gertrude, text: MISSBB GERTRUDE to 82085.
