A celebration of powerful female voices
8th February 2010: This is a collaborative project of voices from all over the world - from the Caribbean to Africa to Europe. Directed and staged by Antoinette Lester in association with Birmingham Rep, this all female group will use only simple percussion and their voices to weave the finest a cappella harmonies, celebrating the beauty of the human voice.Maureen Lilanda, or as she is fondly known in Zambia, Aunty Maureen, has been writing, singing and performing her blend of modern beats and rhythms mixed with the traditional sounds of Zambia for over 20 years now. She is a lead singer with Zambian a cappella group AMASHIWI, and is a four-time recipient of the National Arts Council Award for Best Female Artiste. She will be joined by Nawal, known as Voice of the Comoros, who sings in Arabic, French, English and Comoran. Reflecting her roots in the Comoros islands aka Islands of the Moon in the Indian Ocean, Nawal blends Arabic-Persian aesthetics with Bantu polyphonies, and Sufi trance into an acoustic music that is compelling and beautifully lyrical. Forming the third part of this unique collaboration is British a cappella group Black Voices who, since 1987, have been quietly forming their unique blend of musics from across the Caribbean and African Diaspora, distilling their style into a re-presentation of Black Music from a distinctly black British perspective. Their music is rooted in the black church of gospel and a capella, but takes under its wing blues, jazz and more.
