Rattle & Roll will be visiting mainstream and community venues in the North-east
2nd February 2010: A women’s theatre company will be touring a new play exploring issues surrounding sex work, addiction, homelessness and adoption, throughout the North-east in February and March.
Open Clasp Theatre Company, which works to highlight issues that affect women, will be bringing a new play, called Rattle & Roll, to the region.
Set against the backdrop of regeneration and recession, Rattle & Roll is described as a story about chaos, the order behind it and the strengths of women trying to survive it. All of the characters in Open Clasp’s plays are created by women from their own experiences.
Rattle & Roll has been created following Herstory Told, a project that aimed to tell the stories of women who live in the North-east relating to sex work and exploitation, addiction, homelessness and losing children to adoption.
Women of all ages took part in workshops between March and June 2009 as part of the project, and helped to develop the play.
Catrina McHugh, artistic community development director of Open Clasp, said: “Rattle & Roll comes from the hard work and commitment of all the women and young women who took part in Herstory Told. They did fantastic work. We’re really excited about this play, which we believe will make a positive difference to the lives of women of all ages across the North-east.
“Addressing issues that impact on the everyday lives of women including sexual exploitation, sex work, adoption and homelessness, Rattle & Roll will be another Open Clasp rollercoaster of a comedy drama.”
Rattle & Roll will be visiting mainstream and community venues throughout the North-east. Many of the performances include a drama workshop, to help audiences consider the issues raised in more depth.
Open Clasp Theatre Company was started in 1998 by four Northumbria University Drama students. It uses drama and theatre to address issues faced by women, young women and lesbians all over the North-east and beyond.
