A poetry recital in honour of the first statue to a black woman in England took place on Saturday 8th October 2011 in Stockwell Gardens.
Councillor Christiana Valcarcel, Mayor of Lambeth was joined by poet, Cecile Nobrega, to witness performances by Lascelles James, Poppy Seed, Sihan Osman, and Haroon Anwar with dedications from the Bronze Woman Committee.
The Bronze Woman sculpture of an African-Caribbean woman holding aloft a child was created to celebrate the contribution of the Afro-Caribbean community to the Capital, on the 200th Anniversary of the end of the transatlantic slave trade in 2008.

Israel Runsewe went missing from an address in Waltham Forest on Friday 7th October 2011.
The 12-year-boy was last seen leaving his home address in Farmer Road, Leytonstone E11 at approximately 16:00hrs. Israel is described as black with short dark afro hair, about 5’5 tall, and of slim build. He is known to have family connections in Dagenham, Hackney and south-east London.

Family still waiting for police to finish investigations
A vigil to mark the one-year anniversary of the death of Jimmy Mubenga will be held on 14th October 2011.
A year after his death, Jimmy’s family are still waiting for the police to finish their investigations and for the CPS to consider bringing charges against the three G4S guards arrested in connection with his death.

Courtney Carr nominated for Spirit of London Awards

Fourteen year-old school girl Courtney Carr could have easily been one of the looters, but her decision to criticise the actions of her peers and the government has led to her nomination for a Spirit of London Award, an award given to young, positive role models of London.
In her articles for youth magazine Exposure, Courtney wrote about how the riots do not help Mark Duggan’s family, and offered her ideas on how we can move forward and also what the government needs to do.
