“I love taking part in contests that are involved with a good cause”
2nd July 2009: Maria Namiiro is the most beautiful Ugandan woman in the UK. Maria who was both the judges’ choice and the crowd’s favourite during the Miss Uganda UK 2009 contest held in London on 13th June at the Troxy.
The event brought together the highest number of UK Ugandans. A question that made Maria beat all other contestants was: What is the one thing (revolutionary) that has happened in the world in the last 10 years? Her answer was outstanding; “The introduction of an instant HIV testing kit through saliva” was Maria’s answer, to the cheers of the crowd.
Out of the 15 finalist contestants, eight went through to the final round for questioning.
When asked why she entered Miss Uganda UK beauty contest, Maria said: “Because I am a proud young lady who is neither ashamed nor afraid to be Ugandan, so by me entering Miss Uganda UK gives me an opportunity to say yes I am the young generation of Uganda. I am beautiful both inside and outside and proud to be Ugandan. I have an urge to represent my country in a positive way.”
She is very proud of Uganda which she describes as a country “full of natural beauty, exotic attractions, landscape and heritage that people need to know about. We have strong culture that I am proud to follow and pass on to the future generation.”
She also entered Miss Uganda UK beauty contest because of her love for charity. “I love taking part in contests that are involved with a good cause,” she said, adding that Miss Uganda UK “is connected with Latitude Care Network that identifies a need for health, social care and support services to support the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the society including the elderly, people with disabilities or ill health problems, the unemployed, poor single parent families and children.”
Asked to share with our readers her beauty tips, Maria said: “My beauty tips are to get enough sleep, drink water regularly for a clear skin, cleanse and exfoliate your skin. Finally do not forget to laugh. Laughter is a good remedy for the mind, body and soul.”
Maria wins a modelling contract with Mahogany Model Management, cash prizes, a modelling portfolio by Martin Kuria Photography, an ambassador for Latitude Care Network, face of Brenda Maraka, Club Volts membership, and an automatic entry to Miss Uganda for Miss World 2009 Grand Finale in Kampala on 26th September 2009 at Imperial Royale Hotel.
She will be leaving for Kampala in July for charity work on behalf of LCN.
The 1st princess was Nancy Tamwesigire and 2nd Princess was Brandie Arombo. They were both outstanding and will receive directory into the Mahogany Model Management, cash prizes and portfolios.
The event was hosted by Nancy Kitaka and Yiannis Morgan. Several Ugandan artistes based in the UK entertained the guests. They included Chizzo, Caster P, Paddy Dee and the Boyz, N£lly, Mc Moseh, Fyonna, Elite ac, Angel J, Zack Milk and Plakamille. There was also a traditional dance by African Cultural Development and LCN traditional dancer.
A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to LCN.

Maria’s appeal for children
Maria will be travelling to Uganda at the end of July to spend sometime with the orphans at Latitude Care Network. If you have any toys, children books, sweets, and any other items for children, please contact her to arrange on how you can hand them over to her.
